Photo Manipulation

So, one of my more recent forays in things I don’t have enough time for is photo manipulation / cleanup. The recent respark of interest was thanks to reading through a couple Pop Photography magazine’s at a doctor’s office. In those magazine’s you will find quite often that they highly recommend always taking your shots in raw format. For those not familiar with digital photography, raw format essentially “contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera or image scanner”. The format also contains information about the additional processing the camera performed to the image that put it in the state it is in when you view it for the first time on your PC. The nice thing about raw, is that you can easily manipulate these values, such as exposure, white balance, contrast, and tint, without negatively effecting the quality of the image. So, I took some recent shots in raw and here’s an example of what I’ve been playing with (before/after):

In these images, first you’ll notice the crop, allowing the image to focus on the subject. Then the colors were all modified via the manipulation of the raw format settings (exposure, white balance, and etc) to help bring out the colors and get rid of some of that blahness in the original. And, for grins, I used Photoshop Elements Spot Healing Tool, to remove the power and power cables in the background. Unfortunately, one negative side-effect of the raw images is the increased processing time due to the larger file size. My laptop is really slow at dealing with these, even though it’s still fairly new, so they may force me into using my desktop (which takes me away from being around my family). Either way, I’ve got an itch (being a renewed interest in photography), and I’m trying to scratch it…
