Small Towns, Parenthood, and Yardwork

Well, things are really actually starting to settle down here at the Mock household. We’ve managed to unpack just about every box that was moved, save a few that we know have books. Otherwise we have most of the house arranged, except for a few of the minor details. Some of it’s just because it’s such a big house compared to what we had before, resulting in simple things like determining where figurines should go, could take half a day. Fortunately I think we have enough items to hang, between what we had at home before and the others I had at work, that the house shouldn’t look too incredibly bare.

One other side effect of purchasing an actual house, is the increase in household work. I definately had it easy with the town house, as I never realized how much time simply mowing the lawn and weeding the flowers can take out of a day. However, I am enjoying some of the work (except for when it’s 100+ degrees outside), and I plan to do some serious changes to the flower beds in the front, and possibly start a garden in the back next summer. Fortunately we live just around the corner from both a Home Depot and a Ace Hardware, easing the running around to get stuff I didn’t need before. The biggest problem stands more with the fact that we don’t even have the simple tools required to accomplished even the simplest of tasks. Let’s just say the list of things we need is quite long…

Meara and Lena as doing ok… Lena’s been trying to get into the whole stay at home mom thing, added to the fun of Meara being a goof ball. About a week after we got here, Meara started having fits about eating, and cut back from the number of ounces that she was taking in during a day. The doctor thought it was a feeding strike, probably brought on by a few reasons (between the stress of all the changes, to even mechanical issues with the bottles). Fortunately it seems like she’s getting over it and is slowly taking in more food every day.

Getting used to the small town has been good and bad at the same time. It’s definitely nice and calm around here, not to mention the five minute commute to get to work. But, on the flip-side, getting the right kind of nipple for Meara’s bottles takes an hour drive into Dallas to hit the closest Baby’s-R-Us. Why not Walmart you might ask? Well luck would have it that the kind of nipple she likes, isn’t carried by any of the grocery stores here (at least in the Phase 1 size), even Target. Buying the appliances was huge ordeal as simply browsing would take up an entire day out of a weekend.

Everything else is going well, despite being broker than broke thanks to taxes. $200 “New Texas Resident Tax” just to register both cars, almost $750 worth of taxes for the Hotel stay, and lets not even get started on the property taxes. So that’s not going to well, but we should be back into the norm sometime within the next month or so…

Anyways, we’re getting settled into our new lives here, and we’ll see how things flow from here on out…
