Walking among Daemon’s

Today I began my first foray into the world of BSD, FreeBSD 5.3 to be exact. After having read on Distrowatch.com that they migrated their server over from FreeBSD, I decided to give it a try. They noted their biggest reasons being the long support cycle, while not being 1-2 years behind on half the software. My first test case is a system that is doing nothing more than monitoring the LAN at work, using Nagios and Cacti. One thing I’m already finding to be a learning curve is the different method of directory structure. They place the majority of their “extra” packages under /usr, which most linux users of course wouldn’t be used to. So there is obviously some learning curve, but I want to at least give it an honest try…
